3rd Thematic Unit: Key Strategy Issues (20 ECTS)

The thematic unit "Key Strategic Issues" creates the necessary background knowledge for senior business executives across the range of business history, marketing and quantitative methods necessary for the operation of the business.

In the subsection "Management Science" the required theory is presented through examples, problem solving, methods and use of software . In this way, the student is given the opportunity to develop skills in forming and solving business models and decision making. The following items are covered:

1. Linear Programming and applications

  • Management science in the information society and decision making. Decision making models
  • Linear Programming, Capacity and economic importance, sensitivity
  • Integral Programming and Applications
  • Network problems (transmission, transfer and outsourcing problems)
  • Project planning
  • Use software packages to solve Linear Programming problems

2. Decision Theory

  • Decision-making theory
  • Uncertainty and risk analysis
  • Multi-criteria decision making
  • Game theory

 3. Other Issues

  •  Dynamic Programming
  • Detailed data management methods

In the subsection "Accounting and Finance principles for Managers", we will deal with the overview of the basic principles that govern  financial operations. The course aims to present and analyze the theory and practical applications of Accounting and Financial Management, as well as the development of Investment Analysis and introduction of Portfolio Management. The following items are covered:

  5. Cash Flow Analysis
  6. Capital Costs
  7. Capital Investment Budget
  8. Risk and Capital Investment Budget

  13. Valuation of Fixed Income Securities

Finally,  the subsection "Quantitative Methods for Executives"  presente all the methods that are necessary for the quantitative expression of business problems and the support of relevant decisions. The items are covered:

  1. Real numbers (natural numbers, integers, explicit numbers, prime numbers), rules for inequalities with real numbers
  2. Complex numbers (definition, complex plane (Argand plane), complex number measure, polar (trigonometric) complex form, exponential complex form, Euler type, conjugate complex, complex roots of quadratic polynomial equation (forces)
  3. Functions (illustrations) / definition, scope of function definition (definition), scope of definition of basic functions (polynomial, explicit, implicit, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, hyperbolic), algebraic and transcendental functions
  4. Limits (limit of polynomial function, limit of explicit function, cases where the limit does not exist (eg unit step function or Heaviside function), limits with
  5. Continuation of a function
  6. Derivatives (definition of a derivative in a point, the derivative as a function, typology-rules of production)
  7. Monotony (genuinely increasing function, genuinely decreasing function)
  8. Local extremes
  9. Second derivative criterion for local maxima / minima
  10. Convex-concave (genuinely convex function, genuinely concave function)
  11. Turning points
